Recently I set out to do a project on a celebrity in Isla Vista known as Pirate. He is a homeless man who wears and bandana and when you are talking to him you are likely to hear a few “Aaarrghhh Matey’s” come from him. His real name is Ramon Lucero, he’s an L.A native who found his way to Isla Vista after getting on the wrong bus. I wanted to do this story for two reasons, the first is because he truly is and icon of Isla Vista, everyone has their own Pirate story. Secondly it’s because I think that everyone, regardless of whether they’re homeless or not has an interesting story to be told, homeless people in my opinion or more likely to have a more interesting story than anyone else. In hanging out with Pirate for only 3 days I felt I learned a lot about him, yes, he is a little insane and has fried his brain on a lot of drugs, mostly acid, he still is a person, and a nice, caring person at that. He has 3 sons that he hasn’t talked to in years, a wife that died years ago, and oh yea, one eye. He’s a talkative, giving and picks up after himself wherever he goes,. He loves beer, as he puts it, it “Makes him a jolly good fellow.” He smokes weed on occasion and I’m sure indulges in other drugs, although I didn’t see any of that. He basically lives the life of a college student, he just doesn’t have a house. He wonders, from the help center to Freebirds to the park, to kegNbottle, he wanders. The one thing I learned from this project is that regardless of the amount of money someone has they still are people. We are so good at looking the other way when approached by a homeless man or woman that we never stopped to think that they’re people too, just like us and I wish we would take the time to do that a little more often. So now, i give you Ramon Lucero, or as most of you know him by, Pirate
